Outreach

Consider volunteering for the Boston Private Industry Council’s (PIC) Mock Interviews, which take place each spring.  Supported by corporate sponsors and members, the PIC is Boston’s workforce development board, connecting youth and adults to employment opportunities.

For young people, the PIC helps make the connection between education and work, an important foundation for future career success. Mock Interviews help prepare Boston’s high school students for their interviews with potential summer employers. Volunteers are asked to interview at least four students for 20 minutes each.

Here’s one volunteer’s experience,

The Boston Private Industry Council’s Mock Interviews for Boston high school students is a career leg up, given to motivated, focused, enterprising kids. I signed up last April, thinking that I would go to cheerlead the “Can Be Done” message to kids who had diminished hope in their eyes. I couldn’t have been more charity-headed-wrong. I met five kids who had already mastered several languages, worked multiple jobs at once (while maintaining honor role grades) and who drove entrepreneurial ventures. (One had her own radio show!) They knew what they wanted from me: a challenging, corporate-level interview that made them think and perform. They wanted to learn. Four hours later, I walked away with a powerful sense of The Next Wave. Made up of the five young men and women I met…it’s ready to break.”
